Secure ID Card Making
By Kelsey Williams of Safe-Card ID
ID card making has become easier than ever before. The security options available have made id cards highly secure and difficult if not impossible to duplicate. Cards printed in the current environment cannot be easily counterfeited. Some of the available security methods used are identified in this article. The first method of security is to obtain the correct PVC card stock. Although imaging quality PVC cards work fine for most applications, there are times that a higher level of security is needed for the cards. Recommendations for better card stock would be a 60/40 PVC card stock that is more flexible and endures longer than standard cards. Cards can also be made highly secure by providing specialized text or numbering on the card. Ultra-violet visible text, micro text or pre-printed serial numbers can be incorporated into card stock and provide extra security. Known only to the issuing organization. Cards with any of the above embedded information can be impossible to counterfeited. UV holograms are another option that enhance the security of an id card. The hologram is printed over the surface of an ID card. Although image is not visible to the naked eye, it can be viewed with an UV light. A hologram image can also contain embossed micro-text that is applied by professional lines of card printers. By storing the cardholders information in a central database, the officer providing the visual inspection of the card can compare information from the card with the displayed information in the server's database. This is easily accomplished with a card encoded by mag stripe, bar code or smart card capability. The cardholder information is stored in the server database by serial number. When the serial number from the card triggers the capture and download of the server's database details, the comparison and authorization required can be made for the cardholder. Access can be granted to the areas being secured. Some systems will allow automatic access with matching information, eliminating the need for visual identification by an officer. The strength of an id card's security lies in the makeup of the card construction, embedded options, hologram setup and access system capabilities. Experts in the secure identification markets customize plans for each unique business and organization requiring secure identification.
