The Future of Identification Technology
By Kelsey Williams
The understanding of identification technology has increased rapidly in the past few years. From the days of not even being able to read a fingerprint, we have advanced past the fingerprinting stage. Currently retinal scans and other scans of the body are in use and becoming more sophisticated. Although laminated ID cards have been used alone, the market is trending toward using an identification card as a multi use card. In conjunction with biometric technologies, the card is able to provide a high level of security in organizations that value the use of the ID card. Technology in the future is leaning toward further development of the RFID card. RFID stands for radio frequency identification technology. Replacing a key, a RFID scan can be programed into a computer database. Using a scanner, the body information can be extracted and submitted by a computer program to be compared with the database. If a match occurs, a secure area would open. This type of technology is already available on secured computers. When placing your thumb on a reader, the laptop will unlock or lock. Although the technology is not commonplace with other security access options, some technologists believe this type of access will be commonplace within ten to fifteen years. Some, who advocate the use of a national id card, lobby their agenda with the ideas that RFID, thumbprint identification and microchip information will be beneficial to society. If your history, medical background, insurance and other personal information is embedded in the microchip, they propose that efficient systems could be put in place in many of our government and business dealings. The development of identification technology is moving at a startling rate. Advances in technologies will change the way we work and play. |
