The Security Measures of Ski Passes
By Kelsey Williams of Safe-Card ID
Ski passes of the past were not very secure. It was fairly easy to duplicate a pass, ride the lift and enjoy rides downhill without payment. Passes of today are much more secure. They may look easy to make, but both external and internal components make passes difficult to counterfeit. For a fee, ski passes provide access to ski lifts. The pass may allow unlimited trips up the mountain for a certain period of time or they may allow for a specific number of trips. Purchasing a pay as you go pass may be more economical for some skiers who visit the slopes infrequently. With this method a credit card is billed for the number of pass uses. Cards that are scanned by the liftee are approved when all of the security measures of the resort are deemed ok. Some of these features may be simple visual scan of the card. If the picture and logo match up with the card holder, step one is passed. Other security measures may be a customized laminate on the top of the card. Unique bar card formulas or mag stripe information may also be checked. Other security measures specific to that resort may be applied to each pass. It is in skier's best interests not to tamper with or try to counterfeit a ski pass. To enjoy all parts of the ski experience, follow the quidelines, pay the fees required and enjoy the experience.
